Staying at the right place is often the key to a great trip. Clare and I were lucky enough to stay at a great B&B - the Segenhoe Inn - during our impromptu visit to the Hunter over the weekend.
The first criterion of course is the location. The Segenhoe Inn is located at the doorstep to the vineyards of the upper Hunter, very convenient if you are looking to visit the Hunter and yet stay away from the main commercial vineyards.
The second criterion is the ambiance. The Segenhoe was built in 1837 and has kept many of its original characteristics, including stone walls that are two feet think. It presents a very welcoming
sight when you first drive up and the interior is immaculately maintained and decorated with an amazing collection of antiques. The attention to detail was only second to Cockatoo Cottage in Sussex Inlet. The gardens are well landscaped and
very well maintained featuring a pagoda, various seats and a pond - many relaxing settings to sit and read.
The third criterion is the facilities. The Segenhoe does not have the hotel comforts of a pool and a gym, but has basically everything else including comfortable living areas, TV, DVD and fantastic food. Breakfast is naturally part of the package, but we also had the option of staying for dinner. The food was simply divine starting
from potato and leek soup (me) and garlic prawns (Clare) for entree, satay chicken (Clare) and salmon pasta bake (me) for main; and mango crepe (Clare) and cherry pavolova (me) for dessert. We couldn't finish the mains or dessert, but the food was mouth watering.
The fourth and most important criterion (for me) is the service. The owner - Cherie - runs the place almost singlehandedly. She manages to provide all her guests with exceptional warm service and often goes above and beyond the call of duty. With all this, the price is kept quite reasonable and all in all makes for a great place to stay. The Segenhoe hosts Murder Mystery getaways and Clare and I are hoping to get a group together to do this sometime in the future.
